Almost to the day, one year after the passing of much-loved and respected former Hillarys Yacht Club Commodore Chris Grant, sailors paid their respects
with a minute silence and then took to the water for the first Chris Grant Memorial Race.
With 19 boats and 92 sailors across three divisions, the focus was on Pandora, Chris’ yacht which was generously donated to the club for training purposes. Skippered by Chris Kelly, with former crewman Rob Bortot and Chris’ son Jeremy Grant on board, Pandora didn’t disappoint with a second placing in division three which also resulted in second place for the Viking race. The race was described as a tough one, just how Chris would have wanted it.
In division one Sally Malay (Ian Walker) was first on handicap followed by Lamotrek (John Akers) and Perle (John Bird). Fastest was Mark Pitt on Mulberry.
Bruce Ellery on Show Me was first in division two with Volant (Klaus Scheckel) second and Panache (Geoff James) third. Fastest was Farrouk (Lee Burrows and Rod Hernaman).
Brett Bailey on Sensei celebrated a first and fastest in division three with Pandora second and Sheer Magic (Tony Waymouth) third.
The Viking race standings were first, Tropical Itch (Tony Brooke), Pandora second and Feelin Free (Alan Peacham) third.
Surrounded by family following the race, an appreciative Sandy Grant was on hand to present pennants to placegetters, including her & Chris’ son, Jeremy, who was aboard Pandora which finished a credible 2nd.
For the Grant family, and to all those that knew him, the afternoon was a very memorable occasion and the perfect way to celebrate Chris’ love of the water. Thank you to all those who participated in keeping his memory alive.
