The Angling Section is a friendly, family orientated group of members of varying ages and lifestyles who are actively involved in recreational and competitive fishing, whether it be from a boat or beach.
There are weekly fishing trips, monthly Boat Angling competitions, two Beach Competitions, the annual HYC Team Fish competition and the open Harbour Classic event. The venues for the Beach Competitions will be decided by the members at the Section Meetings.
The season runs from October to September, and is framed by two social events: The HYC Opening Day and the annual Angling Presentation Dinner.
All Club members are invited to join in the activities of the Angling Section.
Inshore and deep sea fishing
If you do not have a boat to go out fishing, don’t worry! The Club vessel Balaton Jack is generally involved in the regular fishing trips and boat competitions. There is also a second Club boat which can be used, if available.
The weekly inshore fishing trips on Wednesdays start at 7am, with the boat returning by 2pm. Cost depends on the running time of the boat motor, but is generally less than $35 per person. Please contact Ian McCall (0450 765 646) if interested.
The monthly Boat Angling Competition takes place on the third Sunday of the month. Anglers need to bring their fishing gear and bait, lunch, chair and drink. Cost for boat use is $30 per adult plus $5 competition fee, $20 per junior. There is no cost for Anglers using their own boats.
Please sign on at the wet bar before 7am on the day to participate. Weigh in starts at 4pm at the wet bar.
Members intending to go out fishing on the Club boat need to enter their names in the boat book at HYC reception up to one week prior to the fishing day.
Watch for the weather forecast the night before fishing. A forecast of winds in excess of 20 knots generally postpones the fishing trip to the following week, but a phone call to Ian McCall (0450 765 646) to confirm is advised.
We hold some very popular Junior Fishing Clinics during school holidays. These clinics are an excellent introduction into fishing, teaching your children how to use fishing gear and identify and handle fish. Your children will also be introduced to the concept of ‘fishing for the future’ by learning about minimum sizes, bag limits and open and closed seasons for certain species. The clinic closes with a weigh in for the fish caught.
You and your children are welcome to join the events held by the Angling Section. You will find the members of our section easy to approach and willing to share their knowledge.
