With a spinnaker sprint to the first mark in a fresh easterly breeze Mark Pitt on Mulberry set a cracking pace for the division one fleet
going on to win by 20 minutes in the Fairway Ocean Race sailed in waters between Hillarys, Rottnest and Fremantle on Sunday.
Dean Giraudo on Murphy’s Law was unlucky after 5 hours of racing to finish just 36 seconds behind Mulberry on handicap with Hard Evidence (Des Riley) third. The first and fastest and first on IRC result confirmed Mulberry’s favouritism for the Ocean Series however there will be challenges coming from Dart Vader (Wayne Pitcher) and Sally Malay (Ian Walker) in the four races that remain. In division two Mark Taylor sailed well in the fluky conditions to win easily on handicap from the fastest finisher Pinta (Kevin Stacey) and Bruce Ellery on Show Me.
These three yachts together with Tropical Itch (Tony Brooke) and Pandora (Chris Grant) are the contenders for the division two trophy.
The Ocean race also served as one of the Viking Championship races with Pandora winning ahead of Helga and Tropical Itch.
