Hillarys Yacht Club opened up their doors to the public on Sunday morning and were inundated with visitors to try their hand at sailing on the annual Discover Sailing Day.
Blessed with a perfect sunny morning and a light breeze twenty two keelboats made an average of four trips each to cater for two hundred and fifty children and adults whilst over one hundred new sailors tried their hands sailing the smaller dinghies.
Under the watchful eye of the skipper, guiding a thirty four foot yacht between dinghies, other keelboats and the Rottnest ferry was no mean feat for a youngster barely able to see over the steering wheel. Families quickly realised the potential of the children learning to sail, beginning with the fun, games-based Tackers’ program in dinghies, whilst parents could crew on keelboats, learning the ropes and enjoying the social aspects of the Club.
Hillarys Yacht Club has an “open door” policy in October where visitors can come and try activities of the angling, dinghy, dive, power and keelboat sections. Discounted memberships are also available for a limited time.
