Hillarys Yacht Club is ramping up the game for next year’s Easter dinghy coaching regatta.
Announcing the club’s second multi-fleet Easter coaching regatta, Hillarys Commodore Neil Harrison says the Club’s vision for the event is for it to achieve must-do status on coaches’ and class calendars after last year’s successful inaugural event.
“The 68 entries across eight classes certainly confirmed that there is solid demand for a blue water regatta like this in Perth. The goal now is to ramp up the learning opportunities and increase the on-shore activities for participants,” he said.
Classes invited to compete in this year’s regatta, which will be held to the west and north sides of Hillarys Marina, include Optimist, Laser, Bic, Minnow, National 125, Taser, 420 and 29ers.
The event will continue to be an Optimist ranking regatta while the organising committee is discussing the addition of other classes with state associations.
A preliminary Notice of Race has been posted on the Club’s website while discussions are under way with coaches and potential sponsors.
Commodore Harrison says the club is hoping to again attract high-level coaches as well as experienced sailors to not only instruct, but also talk about their journeys to achieving championship results.
“On top of the on-water coaching, the opportunity for aspiring sailors to hear how today’s champions reached the top can be truly motivating and inspirational,” he said.
Last Easter’s regatta attracted a number of the state’s leading dinghy coaches and sailors including Olympic gold medallists and WA Institute of Sport head sailing coach Belinda Stowell and fellow coach Ryan Palk. Added to this was Dennis Jones, Chris Kelly and Chelsea Bradford. A further drawcard was the attendance of the Open Bic Worlds team and the decision by the Optimist Association to make the event a ranking regatta.
Located in the Marmion Marine Park, Hillarys offers both relatively calm and challenging open water sailing and is a popular training venue for river sailors wanting to fine-tune their competitive skills before state and national titles.
