Start Crewing & helming
Learn to sail on a Keelboat (yacht). This course is the perfect way to start your sailing journey whilst having fun and gaining a qualification.
Whether you are a complete beginner with no prior experience or knowledge, or have some basic knowledge and would like to progress your skills, this is the course for you! Delivered over 20 hours (all weekend based), this course provides a fun and accessible entry into sailing and will give you further opportunity to improve, develop and advance your sailing skills and techniques.
Learning alongside just three or four other students, our Australian Sailing qualified instructors deliver a fun, safe and quality learning experience on the spectacular Indian Ocean and upon completion you will hold an internationally recognised qualification from Australian Sailing.
What will i learn?
This course develops both your theory and practical skills to confidently crew effectively and take control on the helm.
- Preparation: Prepare sails and rigging, correct use of halyards, sheets and deck hardware.
- Rope work: Skills and techniques; helm and trim sails; tack and gybe, heave-to; effect of heel and trim; anchoring.
- Recover a man overboard under sail.
- Correct operation of safety equipment.
- Emergency events.
- Steering and sailing rules and application.
- Weather and the environment.

This course introduces you to the fun and challenge of using asymmetrical and symmetrical spinnakers. You'll learn how to rig, hoist, fly, gybe, drop and pack a symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnaker. Attendees are expected to have completed the Start Helming Course or have previous sailing experience.
